Love Thy Neighbor
Project type
Ceramic Vessel
Date
December 2022
Location
San Francisco
This ceramic vessel is a symbolic reference to the hypocrisy of christianity and catholicisms preaching to “love thy neighbor”, while simultaneously, *some* of its followers execute the mass genocides of native and indigenous peoples all across the world.
Some, citing the bible and the “will of God” as their rationale. This erasure of indigenous cultures and dominance of Christianity continues happening today. It has evolved into missions- where predominately white Christians or Catholics travel outside of the U.S. to spread and preach “the word of god”. On the front there’s an interpretation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (one of the most well known catholic devotions). It is seen as “a symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for mankind”. I was inspired by my parents experiences being raised in the Catholic Church. As well as their joint decision to raise me outside of a church/religious following.
